With the introduction of the Goods & Services Tax, thetaxation system got simplified and unified for the first time in India. All issues related to GST like rates, rules and regulations are looked after by the GST council that comprises of the finance minister of all states and headed by the Finance Minister of India. Registration under the tax system in the pre-GST period was complicated, lengthy and involved tedious detailing and filling in different application forms. In the GST period, the government has made things much easy and convenient by enabling GST registration online.
For GST registration in India, the applicant has to must open the government GST official site. The GST registration procedure involves 11 distinct steps as mentioned below:-
1. On opening the site, go to the tab – Register Now
The first part, also called Part A, requires filling up of some mandatory details for registering the email id and mobile number. Without completing this step it is not possible to proceed to the next step which is Part B of the application process.
2. Select New Registration.
· Select Taxpayer under ‘I am a’
· Select the state and district of your business entity
· Type in the Name of the Business and PAN.
· Type in the email address and mobile number that has been chosen to be the registered id and number.
· On clicking Proceed, an OTP will be sent on the email and mobile number.
3. Enter the OPT and click continue.
4. The Temporary Reference Number (TRN) will be emailed and smsed to your number.
5. Go to the GST portal again and click Register Now.
6. Enter the TRN and captacha code and click proceed.
7. Enter the OTP received and proceed.
8. On the dashboard the status of the registration will show as ‘Draft’. The second part of Online GST Registration, the Part B of the process is reached by clicking the Edit button.
9. Part B has 10 separate sections that need to be filled and require uploading of the following documents:-
· Identity proof, address proof and photographs of the promoters/owners/directors
· PAN cad of the applicant.
· Aadhaar card of the applicant
· Proof of registering the business – the Certificate of Incorporation or the Partnership Deed.
· Address proof of the business entity
· Bank Account details of the entity
· Letter of Authorization/Board Resolution for authorized signatory
· Once the documents have been downloaded click on verification.
10. All the documents that are being submitted need to be tick-marked. Tick on the verification declaration mentioned on the page and submit the GST online application with the Digital Signature Certificate. Submitting with the means that the OTP will send to the registered mobile number. Using the EVC button will mean that the OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered on the GST site.
11. The last step is where the Application Reference Number (ARN) is sent to the registered email and mobile number.
The ARN is used for checking the status of the New GST registration. Using this process the registration is completed with 2-6 working days. On successful registration a unique GSTIN is assigned to the business entity.
The penalty for not registering under GST and evading payment of taxes is equal to 100% of the tax amount due.
